People In Music History
Holliday, Billie (Eleanor Gough McKay) (1915-1959) Black American jazz singer
of the Harlem Renaissance era. While touring the southern states with Benny
Goodman she wrote, Strange Fruit, which caused great controversy for being "too
political." The title refers to the bodies of lynched blacks she saw from the
window while traveling on the bus. Because it was banned in the South, and
considered too controversial for airplay in the North, it was removed from
future pressings. It only recently has become available. She died of a drug
overdose in 1959.
